bucket list?
way up there
I’ve never been to the top-most twig,
it’s not on my list,
I know that’s true.
I saw her,
swaying as the tree tops
let the breezes do their thing,
otherwise she did not move.
I envied her pacific view,
and briefly wondered
what she cares to see,
when all around her does not hide,
when down means not too far,
when far away is not that far
for wings that wait to spread…
I guess she’s seen it all
ten thousand times,
I guess she might glance
for a moment at me,
and murmur “you wouldn’t believe…”
I think I might,
but I’m content
to let her be alone,
to be that high.

tinkle, sway, hum…
Winter, add Woo, stir
…all the notes make medleys,
it’s a quiet nightclub sound,
it’s okay to listen
with the other ear,
and hear the lilt and the lift
and the living rhythms
without trying too hard
to pay attention,
and nod in time
when an old refrain
makes a hole in the buzz,
and you hear again
those words that throb and skip
and nestle into
those last few tinkling keys…

on an otherwise really ordinary April afternoon.

leftovers of night
nondescript
a rummage of grey,
slowly drifting fluff
above the trees,
a kind of weight of clouds
that does not hasten
for impending day…

a better way to say…
In search of…
I wish I had a better way to say
the things I really want to hear today.
Alas, I don’t, and there’s the rub, you see?
The words I want won’t blossom here for me.

dry tears, is all…
Book review:
All of Us: The Collected Poems
by Raymond Carver (1938-1988)
American poet, short story writer
386 pages
Repeat after me: à chacun son goût.
This is my first experience with Carver’s poetry.
I’ll say this right out: I do not disdain Carver’s poems, neither do I feel any urge to read them again.
He didn’t bother with the lyric voice. Don’t look for any sparks. Occasionally, one will feel moved to dry tears.
Carver offers a monochrome oeuvre. It’s prose in disguise. In some dusty corners Carver is included in the loosely defined group of poets who write so-called “dirty realism.” Think Bukowski (but Carver isn’t as strident as Bukowski, not nearly as imperious as Bukowski).
Carver’s poetic efforts are better than dirt, but what he writes really isn’t poetry in any flavor that appeals to me.

yesterday’s trail…
woodward
The mystic mess
of leaves and twigs
and fractured stones,
no trace of steps,
the trees lean in
to shade
the vestige of a path,
there is the jumble
of shapes no one has touched,
the water of each season
knows its way,
the damp persists
in darkened earth,
scant colors fleck
the sombre tints,
a jewel of nature’s wont…
